Passengers
2018/01/29 @home on DVD from library /w Kendra Clever concept and an interesting story. Questions about how things are setup on the ship detract from the story.

Alien
2018/01/21 @Goodrich, Theater 4, row 4 via MoviePass and Flashback Cinema Retro future is always a fun thing to see in movies and books. This movie was made in 1979 and the future it portrays has computers that are the same terminal based ones of the time, but more powerful. It was also interesting to see how prevalent smoking was. And, everything is run with physical switches and buttons. Aside from that, the rest of the movie holds up pretty well. Special effects of outer space were great, and the alien creatures were believable. Though, the explosions were kinda ridiculous. The movie has a slow buildup of terror, done in a way that I appreciate, mostly off-screen. Knowing what the alien looks like stole some of that terror, but it was still well done. Most likely, it was hard to make the alien suit move in a believable way, limiting what they could film, but I feel that makes it scarier. The unknown is terror.

Darkest Hour
2018/01/09 @Celebration, theater 2, seat F5 via MoviePass An interesting tale of Churchill becoming Prime Minister and his securing of his position within the first month. It was difficult to understand Churchill at a number of points, which I get that he talked like that, but it makes it difficult to understand what is going on. Also, the movie wanders at points, focusing on characters that don't really have a role in the movie, like his assistant. Also, too much focus is put on times when nothing is happening, and not enough on significant things, like when people are changing their mind about things for unknown reasons. Still, it was worth a watch for the history. The tone was great, and the speeches powerful and well done.

“Surprising hilarious sequel to the original Jumanji. This time, Jumanji takes the form of a video game and is explained (well enough) in the movie. I enjoyed it from beginning to end, more than the original. The characters in the game being out of sync with the players controlling them may be clich” read more

The Greatest Showman
2018/01/01 @Celebration Cinema, theater 2, seat D10 via MoviePass A surprise musical, as I don't recall any of the previews indicating as such. Music was OK, but not memorable. Story was predictable and likely glossed over many details. Entertaining, but I found myself bored at parts.

The Lego Batman Movie
2017/12/31 @home from DVR with Kendra and Katy Amusing, self-aware story of Batman. Story was kinda weak. And, I really don't get why it is "Lego" Batman? Couldn't there just have been a silly Batman cartoon? Sure, some Lego stuff was worked into the story, but it would have just taken a different turn without it.

Expectations of the plot and characters are dashed, with failure being a main theme. 2017/12/16 @Celebration Cinema Crossroads - theater 12, seat E4 via MoviePass Still enjoyed. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
2017/12/10 @Celebration Crossroads, Theater 8, Seat D3 via MoviePass A tale of believable characters and the effect an aging tragedy has on them. Numerous spots of dark comedy with a crime drama as the backdrop. Clever writing and great acting, the characters grow throughout and it is encouraging to see it play out.
